Luny served in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars and retired to Teignmouth in 1807. From that date until his death he painted over 2,200 pictures, many of engagements he had experienced at first hand. 'HMS Phoenix' defeated the French ship 'Didon' off Cape Finistère on 10 August 1805. The French flag was afterwards presented to Aaron Tozer, who was wounded in the engagement, and is now in the Ashmolean.
