This painting, and its companion picture 'Departure of the Fleet', relate to the somewhat half-hearted attempt by the French in 1798 to land a force in Mayo to support the rebellion of the United Irishmen. However, the Rebellion was over by the time the French arrived; a small reinforcement of ten ships was intercepted off the coast of Ireland by the English and only three ships escaped.
