On one side is depicted: (left) a rescue brigadesman decked in breathing apparatus who represents safety, (centre) a screen lass representing hardship, and (right), an overman providing a depiction of management. The reverse of the pillar shows a coalface worker, pick in hand, carving out the inscription 'The End of an Era' in a nostalgic expression of labour and manpower.
