The 'Good Hope' was originally a Dutch vessel named the 'Nagelboom', but became part of the East India Company's fleet following its capture as a prize during the British expedition to take the Cape of Good Hope in 1795, (see BHC0497). The 885-ton ship made two voyages for the Company; the first to Bombay between June 1796 and October 1797, the second to Madras between February 1798 and September 1800. The painting has been signed by the artist and is dated 1825.
