The later inscription led to the sitter’s misidentification as Edward Seymour (c.1506–1552), brother of Jane Seymour, who was created Earl of Hertford (1537) and Duke of Somerset (1547). However the model’s appearance does not match a miniature of Seymour painted by Nicholas Hilliard after an earlier lost portrait (1560; London, National Portrait Gallery). Moreover, the sitter wears the French order of Saint-Michel. The correct identity is probably of Jean de Brosse, duc d’Étampes. The Wallace Collection’s picture is generally considered the prime version of a number of portraits of the sitter. It was described as ‘a small portrait by Holbein on a green ground of Le Comte d’Hertford’ at the sale of William Beckford of Fonthill in 1822.
