This beautifully executed picture remains a firm favourite with visitors to the gallery, with numerous comments on how 'you could just reach out and pluck the stray strands from the sweaters of the two men.' The two fishermen featured are Mr Gutteridge and Mr Joseph Currie Davies. Although the setting appears to be a public house it is in fact the artist’s studio. Edward Joseph Head was a native of Scarborough and moved to Tenby in the 1890s. Here he established himself as an artist and teacher of art. His works were frequently exhibited in the Royal Academy. At Tenby he established an art class where he taught the young Augustus John. It was on Head’s recommendation that Augustus’s father permitted his young son to attend the Slade School of Fine Art.
