Folding fan, the guards carved with elongated figures, their hands and heads picked out in ivory. The leaf is painted with a maniacal scene in which a devilish figure conducts an orchestra of similarly demonic characters. An identical fan painted by Georges Clairin and titled 'La Diabolique' is illustrated in an 1883 edition of the popular journal, 'La Vie Parisienne'. The reverse carries the name of the maker, Alexandre, the preeminent fan maker in Paris during the second half of the nineteenth century, although, by the time of the fan’s production the company's founder and namesake, Felix Alexandre had sold on and retired into anonymity.
