Queen Dido lays on a funeral pyre in the centre of the picture outside her palace, seen to the left. She is richly dressed but her breast is bare and she has a sword piercing her heart. She is able to pull herself up to respond to a grieving female figure to her right whose arms are outstretched in disbelief. Behind them are a group of courtiers showing a variety of expressions of grief; one points to the distant view of the harbour with departing ships.
