The painting is probably intended to depict an Irish cottage interior, probably in Southern Ireland as Nicol had spent time in Dublin and the theme of the Irish peasant pervades many of his genre scenes. The hearth appears to be typically Irish and the presence of the holy water stoup in the form of a crucifix also suggests that the interior is an Irish one.
