This painting was based on a year of growth in the floral world and contains both garden and wild flowers. The canvas is based on a spiral of growth beginning at the centre with snowdrops which symbolise the end of a winter and the beginning of spring. The spiral unwinds with the year, and the flowers spiral out from the centre as they appear during the year, ending at the edges with the autumn/winter flowers. The artist works from studies she has made in situ, from specimens she has collected and from photographs she has taken. She says ‘I like to work large – I want looking at my work to be an experience’. Wise was trained at Reading University and Goldsmiths in London and now lives and works in Gloucestershire. All her work is nature-inspired.
