Folding fan, the smoked mother of pearl sticks pierced and gilt with floral motifs. The leaf is painted on the recto with Western figures clothed in Japanese style garments. The subject references Japonism and the Western fascination with Japanese culture, especially prevalent in the decades following Japan’s forced reopening to the West in the 1850s. At the centre of the scene is a man sporting a large parasol and carrying a caged cupid – a light-hearted reinterpretation of the so-called ‘Cupid Seller’ fresco discovered in the 18th-century at the Villa di Arianna in Stabiae, close to Pompeii.
