This image of the Crucifixion focuses on the figures of Christ on the cross and Mary Magdalene praying at his feet, while the Virgin Mary, Saint John and the Holy Women observe them on the left. A group of soldiers on horseback surround the centurion on the right. The painter has introduced earlier episodes of the Passion as part of the landscape background. The triumphant entrance of Jesus in Jerusalem represented on the left, contrasts with the tragic tone of his meeting with Saint Veronica on his way to Calvary on the right.
