The inn depicted in this early 19th-century painting is reputedly the place where Branwell Brontë, entering a literary competition, pulled out what he thought was a poem, only to discover he had accidentally brought a prose work. Later, witnesses wrote that they believed the work he read out to have been the opening chapters of 'Wuthering Heights', although it is likely to have been his short story 'Thurstons at Darkwall'. For years, though, the episode cast doubt on the authorship of 'Wuthering Heights'. The Crossroads Inn still exists on the road from Haworth to Keighley.
