Large carved stone overmantel or chimneypiece from Furness Abbey. The detailed carving shows the creation of Eve in the garden of Eden. Adam is semi-recumbent, naked in the centre foreground. Behind him, Eve is seated facing right towards a semi-kneeling God, with long voluminous robes. His left hand is extended onto Eve's left shoulder. A scroll rises from his mouth. The whole scene is framed by trees, undercut. Animals are depicted in the foreground and background, they include an insect, a rabbit, stags, unicorn, camel, donkey, horse, bear, lion. Above the scene, the holy spirit in the form of a dove with outstretched wings and a halo is depicted left of the head of God, both amongst clouds.
