The sitter, identified by a label on the reverse, is Michelle-Julie-Françoise-d’Esparbès de Lussard d’Aubetterre de Jonzac (c.1715–1757), who married the marquis de Tillières in 1730, and bore him two sons. She is shown wearing a simple powdered coiffure and a blue silk pelisse trimmed with squirrel fur. Works of this kind displayed a new conception in French portraiture that aimed above all at ‘naturalness’, which was to find its most notable expression in the work of the pastellist Maurice Quentin de La Tour.
