Folding fan, the sticks alternating ivory and wood. The outermost parts of the leaf are painted with decorative panels incorporating Classical grotesques and vases. In the centre is a view of the Colosseum, Rome, to the left of which is the arch of Constantine and derelict remains of the Meta Sudans fountain (since demolished).

This fan is a type of Grand Tour souvenir and appealed mainly to the educated men and, to a lesser extent, women touring the Continent in the 18th century. The compositions decorating Grand Tour fans were mostly derived from reproduction prints of popular attractions – notable views of Classical monuments and ruins. Tourists could purchase either a completed fan or just the painted fan leaves, which were brought home in custom-fit folders and mounted onto sticks or otherwise framed and displayed within the home.
