This painting depicts members of (later Sir) Thomas Fairbairn's family showing Lady Fairbairn in the centre, dressed in silver grey. Her children are all around her – Thomas, Mary, Constance, James and Arthur. The table is laid for tea. In the background are two deer. Thomas Fairbairn was an industrial magnate of Victorian Britain. Fairbairn's factories made him wealthy, and he used this to support many artists, including William Holman Hunt. A giant of the Victorian art world, Holman Hunt was a founder member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood along with Millais and Rossetti.
