Robert Anning Bell was a painter, modeller, illustrator and designer of stained glass and mosaics. From 1910 he was Professor of the Design Section at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) and in 1918 he became Visiting Director of Studies to the Design School, a post he retained until his death in 1933. This painting owes much to his work as a book illustrator.

This painting was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.
