The painting shows the charity of St Nicholas. The saint is shown standing on the right half of the picture holding in one hand money and in the other a crozier. He is giving dowries to the three unmarried women who sit sewing sheets on the left side of the painting. In the left background the sick father of the three women lies in bed. Two flat horizontal grooves across the back of the painting are similar to the grooves made on the backs of Russian icons to enable them to be placed on an iconostasis.
