Serres was a French sea captain, who settled in England after being made a prisoner-of-war in the 1750s and became Britain’s leading marine painter of the later eighteenth century. He was the only marine specialist to be a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768. This painting, recently conserved, is one of a series on long loan to the Museum. They record the British capture of the Spanish colonial city of Havana in 1762, during the Seven Years War, 1756–1763. When he was a ship’s master, Serres visited Havana and partly based images of distant colonies like this on first-hand knowledge.

For further details on the capture of Havana and the other paintings in this series, see BHC0408.
