This painting shows clear influences of the most advanced artistic techniques of the time. Auguste Paul Charles Anastasi illustrates his understanding of aspects of Impressionist technique, demonstrated by the broad brushstrokes and impasto quality of the paint surface. These impressions of the landscape suggest a date during the artist's mature years, therefore it is reasonable to suppose it was painted just before he lost his sight in 1869. Claude Monet was also painting at Bougival from 1869 to 1870, and two of his works from this time appear to show the Cabaret Maurice: 'La Seine à Bougival' and 'Infantry Guards Wandering Along the River'.
