On top of a table are a group of objects: a brown vase, fruit, books and a dish with a fan. In the background is a blue curtain, the leaves of a plant and a cylindrical tube propped up against a wall. It appears to be a random selection. However, Peploe deliberately chose these objects for their interesting shapes and colours. He uses a black outline to define their shape and then carefully arranges them so that they balance each other. He uses the different colours of the objects to set up contrasts of light and dark tones, but these are also strategically placed to create an overall harmony. Each element of the composition fits together rather like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
