Howson’s painting is characterised by strong draughtsmanship and even stronger images. In general he depicts a male-dominated world, populated by victim and victimiser (often the victim is also the victimiser), which is drawn from his experiences in the Army and of Glasgow working-class life when he dropped out from Glasgow School of Art for two years. Aggression and depression are recurring themes in Howson’s work.
