A primitive ship’s portrait showing the brig ‘Martha Edmonds’ in full sail, broadside-on in a calm sea. Her name is visible on the flag flying from her main mast. Several figures can be seen on board and the smoke from a steam ship can be seen on the right with land beyond.

The artist painted a number of ship’s portraits towards the end of the nineteenth century and this painting is signed ‘W. Pearn’ and dated 1880.
