The artist says: 'I first met Anthony when I joined my local gym. At that time Anthony, an ex-professional boxer, was teaching there. By Anthony’s own admission he was overweight and unfit, but was working hard to get back into shape. He wanted to get back into the boxing ring. Anthony confided that he had had a chequered past and that boxing saved him from the street. Anthony was an inspirational character with a large personality, but I wanted the portrait to be simple. Anthony looks straight at the viewer. There is a look in his eyes that shows both hope and regret. He knows he is out of shape but is hopeful that he can get back in the ring. The size of the portrait reflects his personality, but he did not like sitting still for the portrait.
