This painting is of an actual birthday party that took place at Man Sands, near Brixham, Devon. The subjects are a group of teenage girls who are enjoying a picnic. According to the artist, this was a final gathering of friends with their mothers. The girls have since all embarked on their careers.

This scene with its subtle colours conveys the more personal use of the beach by locals in comparison to holiday-makers who visit in the summer.
