This sculpture commemorates the role that men and women played in the war effort, particularly in the factories of Coventry which produced heavy machinery and ammunition. Three sculptural beech leaves, each with a different theme: men and machines, the role of women, and the park today, which includes images of music, sport, flora and fauna.

Inscription description

The Beech Leaves / This artwork was created and installed / to commemorate the centenary of the start of The First World War and was the final part / of the park's improvement programme funded by the BIG and Heritage Lottery Fund. / Thanks go to the Friends of the War Memorial Park / who worked with the council to provide ideas for this artwork. / and to select an artist. / The artist chosen was Steve Tomlinson who submitted / two designs for public consultation. This was the winning design. / Beech tree leaves are significant in the park because the beech was the main species planted within the park when it was first established for the people of Coventry in 1921.
