The figure in 'The Bather' is remarkably similar in pose and attire to that on the left hand side of a six-panelled screen, Beach Scene with Bathers, Pier and Ships, 1925 (Private Collection). The model here has fairer hair than that in the screen composition, and remains unidentified. 'The Bather' was painted around a time of crucial development for Wood: he met and befriended Ben and Winifred Nicholson in 1926 and also travelled to Cornwall where he two years later he would ‘discover’ the naïve fisherman-artist, Alfred Wallis.
