This dramatic painting depicts an incident that happened on the 23rd June 1848. The people of Paris took to the streets after the government shut the national workshops, thus causing widespread unemployment. At the Porte Saint-Denis, a woman climbed the rubble in a defiant move towards the troops shooting at the insurgents, waving the flag she had taken from the dead insurgent leader. The soldiers shouted at her to withdraw, but she did not and was killed.
