Dove began life as a house-painter, but soon became associated with George Chambers, the celebrated marine artist. He was known for paintings depicting scenes from Liverpool; his finest work was considered to be the scene on the Mersey on the occasion of a visit of the Duke of Edinburgh. Dove died in a workhouse in Whitby, reduced to poverty at an advanced age.
