The subject of this painting does not come from a scriptural source but derives from various early church fables collected by Jacobus de Voragine in his Golden Legend of c.1260. In this scene, the Apostles St Mary and St Martha gather around the Virgin Mary's open tomb. Their upwards glance perhaps reflects the moment in the story where the Virgin Mary ascends to heaven accompanied by angels. Although the ascension to heaven is not shown directly in this painting, it can be seen in later developments of this composition by the artist, such as the one in the Royal Collection.
