Copied after a picture by Leandro Bassano, this painting is one of the series of small copies made by Teniers after the Italian pictures in the collection of the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands (1646–1656; see Teniers P636–638). Teniers’s copies were commissioned in 1651 as models for the engravings in the illustrated catalogue of Leopold’s collection, the 'Theatrum Pictorium', published in Antwerp in 1660 (later editions 1673 and 1684).
