John Le Capelain’s studio was in the attic of 1 Hill Street, St Helier. This painting offers a fascinating insight into how the nineteenth-century artist worked. The room is cluttered with the tools and materials of Le Capelain’s trade – his studio easel has a roughly drawn portrait perched upon it and several palettes are loaded with paint ready to be used. A sketchbook leans against a chair. Empty frames and blank canvasses are propped up against the wall. It is almost as if Le Capelain has just left the room, allowing us to enter and explore his world.
