This is an early portrait of the artist's father from 1868–1870 and one of two in the collection. A label on the reverse implies that it was exhibited c.1870 and on sale for £100. The address is given as 2 Finboro Road, West Brompton, where Goodwin lived from 1870–1877.

Samuel Goodwin was married to Rosetta. They moved to Maidstone and raised a family of eight children (a ninth had died) at 62 Boxley Road. Samuel worked as a builder and Albert Goodwin’s diary recalls that money was often tight when he was a boy.
