In the early 1930s, Winifred Nicholson was a highly respected painter of flowers and landscapes. Figure painting was largely restricted to her immediate family. This work was painted at a time of personal sadness, a few months after her husband, the artist Ben Nicholson, had decided to live with Barbara Hepworth. Winifred took their three children to the Isle of Wight and painted their portraits and views from the house. She often painted a work in one sitting, direct from nature.
