An interior scene, in a studio. On the right is George Morland, seated at his easel. He turns to look around at us, a sombre look on his face. He is dressed in a long brown coat. In his left hand he holds his palette, with his paintbrush or mahl stick in his right, and is painting a cottage landscape scene. Next to him is a small table with brushes, rags, pots of paint, etc. On the floor are a jug, a bottle and a glass. Behind him are various canvases with landscapes and animal studies. At the foot of the easel are two dogs, a black and a brown and white one. On the left of the picture, standing at the fireplace frying sausages, is Morland's man, Gibbs, wearing a long green frock coat. Near the fireplace are a jug, a cracked plate, a pair of bots, a bellows and a bundle of faggots for the fire.
