Heffner worked for an English art dealer from the beginning of the 1870s. He often undertook journeys to England where he found clients for his paintings. In the winter of 1883 Heffner undertook his first journey to Italy where he settled in Rome, returning every winter until 1888. Heffner's favourite theme was the portrayal of nature in the evening twilight and on gloomy days, with wetland brushwood thickets and marshy moorlands. Reflections of light on quiet water areas and ponds were a common feature of these works along with the ancient ruins he found in Rome. A similar painting of a Roman aqueduct by this artist is in the collection of the National Gallery of Sydney. It is believed that this work was shown at the Royal Academy, London in 1881.
