While shepherds watched their flocks at night, an angel appeared to announce the birth of Christ (Luke 2: 8–18). One of a large number of copies of an influential composition, this may date from the seventeenth century. The prototype may be the version formerly in the collection of the Duke of Rutland, of c.1560, rather than that in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, of c.1558. This painting has been on loan to the University Church, Oxford, since 1988.
