In March 1620, Rubens agreed to produce thirty-nine paintings for the ceilings of the galleries in the Jesuit Church in Antwerp. These were executed by assistants from models supplied by the artist. Rubens also painted a number of summary monochrome sketches of which this is one. This was one of the subjects commissioned but not included in the final scheme. The coloured model is in the Gemäldegalerie der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna.
