Ankerwycke lies about three miles from Windsor down the River Thames, next to Runnymede (a former campus of the University). Bennett had read about research concerning ancient yew trees and since 1993 he has returned again and again to the Ankerwycke yew to make new drawings and paintings. The colours and sculptural shapes of the trunk, myths and historical accounts, together with its great age (possibly 2,500 years), have captivated the artist. His paintings try to embody a sense of the tree as a 'witness' through time and as an 'axis mundi' – a spiritual and social centre for people. The small Benedictine Priory dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene was built alongside the yew sometime after 1160.
