Edward Hughes painted a range of genre and historical paintings. This work picks up on a key subject in Victorian history painting – the English Civil Wars of the seventeenth century. The focus is on a frightened woman and her daughter as soldiers ascend the staircase. History painting for Victorians was a vehicle for a wide variety of political, moral and religious ideas. Scenes were selected to inspire calm with regard to the present; kindling patriotic pride, moral virtue and fear of revolution in the minds of onlookers.
