The artist was nicknamed Guercino (squinter) because he was slightly cross-eyed. Born in Cento, he established himself as a leading painter in Bologna. After the Last Supper Christ went to the Garden of Gethsemane with Peter, James and John. In the agony of doubt Christ prayed, 'Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me'. In this alterpiece from the 1640s, the cup is depicted as a chalice containing the three nails of the Crucifixion, linking Christ's passion with the Mass.
