This painting shows the Victorian and Edwardian fascination and romanticism of the Middle Ages. Shakleton was born in Bradford. He studied at Bradford Technical College and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in 1893. He travelled to France and Italy on a British Institute Scholarship and studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. He painted in Sussex and London, and was a member of the New English Art Club, whose members included Ethel Walker whose self portrait and 'Decoration for an Ivory Room' also appear in this exhibition.
