Helen, the daughter of Leda and Jupiter, was famed for her beauty, which Homer likened to that of the goddess Venus. She married King Menelaus of Sparta, but was abducted by the Trojan prince, Paris (cf. Boucher P444 and Van Dyck P85). The Greeks mounted an expedition to recover her and thus began the Trojan War, the subject of Homer’s Iliad.
