This is the earliest oil painting in the collection of Tenby Museum & Art Gallery. This panoramic view of Tenby is painted from what is today known as North Cliff. Eagle-eyed observers will note nude bathers on the beach before the laws of modesty were imposed upon the town. The picture also shows bathing machines on the North Beach. Bathing machines gained popularity in the nineteenth century when sea bathing was encouraged for health-giving reasons. There were strict regulations governing the use of these machines. Very little source material is available on this artist. He was possibly born in London in the 1770s and died in 1845. As well as being a painter in oils, Golding was also known as a line engraver.
