A temple dog, Nepalese in style. The dog's head is turned to his left, with his mouth open to bare his teeth, there is a beard under his chin and the ears are flopping down. His flame-like tail curls up and over his back. He is depicted wearing a saddle cloth, which hangs down either side of his body. This is decorated with overlapping circular geometric designs, repeated on the sides of the rectangular pedestal base. There is a irregular fixing 'weld' on the top of the saddle, suggesting that another figure was once mounted on top. This figure was probably the fierce Hindu god Bhairava, an avatar of Shiva widely adopted by Tibetan Buddhists, often depicted riding a dog.
