Norman Garstin was to settle in Newlyn in 1886 and he became the intellectual mentor of the Newlyn School. This early work was painted in Tangier in 1883. Garstin had just spent several years studying in Paris and his appreciation of French painting was advanced. In 1884 he wrote of Edouard Manet: 'He lets in light and air. Pictures like his later ones amongst the brown bitumen canvas of the average exhibition seem like patches of sunlight on a prison wall'.
