Morell is depicted half-length seated at a table, facing left, wearing a red coat, cravat and wide-brimmed hat. On the table are four books, a sheet of paper (with 'Aet. 60') and an inkpot; Morell is about to use his right hand to write with a quill. He is seated on a red coloured chair, a green curtain is draped from the top centre to behind the chair and in the top corner are some organ pipes. From behind the curtain appears a coat of arms and below that a medal on a thread hangs from the wall. The postnominal letters identify Morell as a Professor of Sacred Theology and Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries. He is best known as the librettist of many of Handel's oratorios.
