In mainland Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries the commission of secular, heraldic glass was common. Switzerland was a centre of stained glass production of this type. This small-scale panel is a fine example of the type of commemorative panels that were commissioned by patrons. It combines religious and allegorical images with heraldic devices and portraits of the donors in a well-balanced composition. At the centre is a biblical scene depicting Jacob wrestling with an angel, adjacent to a blindfolded female figure with balancing scales representing Justice, accompanied by inscriptions in German. To the left is a man dressed in armour and carrying a lance, and to the right a man in armour with a gun over his shoulder. These two secular figures may represent the individuals mentioned in the inscription, two family members, Jakob Buchmüller (1639-1721), the donor, and his son Peter Buchmüller (1670-1745).
