This work was inspired by the swans that are seen at The Maltings by the River Avon that flows through Salisbury city centre. The artist distinguishes between the swans and the flowing river by use of strong shape and colour. This effect has been heightened by using silhouettes against stylised patterned water. In places silver foil has been applied to hint at swans' beaks and enhance the abstract nature of the picture. The picture proportions were designed on the same scale as the windows seen in the central corridor to create the effect of openings into the outside environment. Traditionally a ‘silhouette’ is a term applied to an outline shape with a flat colour interior (usually black) as this originated from 18th-century portraits cut from thin black card.
